N is for Night

N is for Night

There was a time
when we walked the dog at night
and talked about the child in our future,
snow crunching beneath our feet,
hope stirring within our hearts—
O holy night.

There was a time
when we would lie in bed
and wait to hear the voice
of the owl, soft and deep,
resounding from the silent pines—
O holy night.

There was a time
when our son looked for the moon.
Every night, eyes wide, body alert,
he raised his arm to the heavens:
the moon, the moon!—
O holy night.

There was a time
when shepherds slept beneath the starry skies,
never suspecting that the stillness would be broken
by a choir of angels singing Gloria
and saying, Go and See—
O holy night.

O night, O night divine!
